Gloriously Ordinary Sundays - 14th December 2025
As you will probably know, the brilliant Bryony Shannon and I recently launched the Gloriously Ordinary Language Myth Busters Podcast.
Gloriously Ordinary Language is rooted in Test Two of Gloriously Ordinary Lives - it’s about making the language we use real, inclusive and human.
In episode 2, we’re busting the myth: this language is in the legislation so we have to use it
Service user. Customer. Client. Vulnerable. Complex. Hard to reach. Non-compliant. Challenging behaviour. Activities of daily living. Accessing the community.
What if we told you none of these words appear in any of the legislation? Care Act 2014, the Mental Capacity Act 2005, the Human Rights Act 1998 and the Equality Act 2010.
None of them.
One of the reasons people give us for using language that really isn’t gloriously ordinary is that it’s the language used in the legislation and therefore we have to use it. We want to bust that myth today!
Check out episode two and let us know if there are any more myths you’d like us to bust.
PS. Did you see? The Gloriously Ordinary Sundays Podcast episode 14 is here. You'll hear that I am absolutely thrilled to introduce you all to the lovely Marianne Selby-Boothroyd, who's joining the Gloriously Ordinary Lives team... that's right, the Gloriously Ordinary Lives team! How exciting is that? Have a listen, and we'd love to hear what you think!
