Gloriously Ordinary Sundays - 9th August 2026

As you will probably know, the brilliant Bryony Shannon and I host the Gloriously Ordinary Language Myth Busters Podcast.

Gloriously Ordinary Language is rooted in Test Two of Gloriously Ordinary Lives - it's about making the language we use real, inclusive and human.

In episode 4, we're busting our virtuous statement that Gloriously Ordinary Language is not about policing language or banning words. But we've both noticed ourselves saying, 'this isn't about banning words… but I'd happily never hear the word…' and then saying whatever word is causing us angst that day. So we thought it was time to admit there are actually a few words we'd genuinely be happy never to hear again.

We're mostly pretty mellow - we'd much rather you got curious about a word and thought about what it suggests about power, processes and relationships. That's where the hmmm… fits in. But in this episode, we unpick four words we'd happily leave at the door: non-compliant, complex needs, placement, and service user.
